[Guide] Working with VMware Workstation 8 Clone Feature
One of the key VMware Workstation 8 feature is to Clone Virtual Machines running in VMware Workstation & vSphere hosts. Also you can check VMware Workstation 8 Remote Connections Feature. But for this cool feature there is one disadvantage that "You cannot make a clone of a virtual machine or snapshot that is powered on or suspended". But for small deployment its very good feature.
There two types of clone in VMware Workstation 8,
1. Linked Clone - A linked clone is a refrence to the original virtual machine and requires less disk space to store. However, it cannot run without access to the original virtual machine.
2. Full Clone - Full Clone is mostly used to clone full virtual machine. A full clone is a complete copy of the original virtual machine at its current state. This Virtual Machine is fully independet, but requires more disk space to store.
So, Which one you prefer? I always prefer "Full Cole" -:)
So lets get started..
As discussed above, "You cannot make a clone of a virtual machine or snapshot that is powered on or suspended" So turn off the Virtual machine.
Right Click on Virtual machine which you want to clone & Navigate to the Manage-> Click on Clone,
At Welcome screen Click on Next to continue,
Select "The Original State in the Virtual Machine" as a Clone state, even you can select existing snap shots for cloning,
I am going to create "Full Clone" of my Virtual Machine, so select it & click next..
Set destination Virtual Machine Name & Location,
Now Cloning has started, it will time according to your original Virtual machine size. For my test ESXi 5 cloning it take just 3 Minutes. :)
Now Clone has completed, click on "Close" complete the cloning.
As you can see my VM has cloned.. Enjoy this new feature of VMware Workstation 8.
