Upgrading vSphere 4.0 & 4.1 to VMware vSphere 5.0 via Update Manager 5



In my previous post I showed how to upgrade VMware vSphere 4.1 to Vmware vSpher 5.0 via VMware vSphere 5 DVD. Now I am going to upgrade my VMware ESX 4 Server to VMware vSphere 5 via VMware vCenter update Manager 5. Lets get started, 
My current VMware ESX version is 4.0 build 208167 & I am going to upgrade it to VSphere 5.0 via Update Manager.
 Login to your VMware vCenter Server via vSphere Client. Select host which you want to upgrade.
 Click on "Update Manager" tab & select "Admin View" tab
 Click on Import EXI Image option.
 Provide path of your VMware vSphere 5 ISO image file & click Next to start Upload.

 Click next to continue.
 Now it will ask you to create BaseLine,  assign name to your baseline & click finish.
 Again select your host which you want to upgrade & Select Update Manager. Under Update Manager select Attach option.
 Select Baseline which we created in above step & click attach.
 Now Click on "Remediate" option
 Click next to continue,
 Accept License agreement & click next to continue

 Add some description for your task & select the Remediate the selected host immediately option. Click on next.
 Click Next to Continue,,
 Click on Finish to start the upgrade process.
 You can see the status in Recent tasks bar.
Now you can see the VMware ESX Host is upgraded from 4.0 to 5.0 via Update Manager & host automatically comes out of the maintenance mode.

How to install VMware vCenter Server 5 on Windows 7


To install VMware vCenter server on Windows 7 64 bit with SP1 we need to modify VMware vCenter 5 & VMware vSphere Update Manager 5 "MSI" files. Actually VMware vCenter Server 5 is not supported officially on Windows 7 .

1. Download & extract ISO image of VMware vCenter Server 5 to any folder in Windows 7 machine.
2. Download "Insted" for editing msi file from Download InSted and install it on your system.
3. Open Insted and open file "VMware vCenter Server.msi" from the extracted VMware vCenter folder.

4. In Tables click on item "LaunchCondition"
5. on the right find row with text, as shown below,
Installed Or ((MsiNTProductType = 3) And (VersionNT > 502 Or (VersionNT = 502 And ServicePackLevel >= 2)))
and modify it to
Installed Or ((MsiNTProductType = 1) And (VersionNT > 502 Or (VersionNT > 502 And ServicePackLevel >= 0)))
after that save and close InSted.
1. Now open file "VMware vSphere Update Manager.msi" from the extracted VMware vcenter media.
2. in Tables click on item "LaunchCondition"
3. on the right find row with text,
(MsiNTProductType = 3) And (VersionNT > 502 Or (VersionNT = 502 And ServicePackLevel >= 2))
and modify it to:
(MsiNTProductType = 1) And (VersionNT > 502 Or (VersionNT > 502 And ServicePackLevel >= 0))
Now save and close.
Now download 64-bit version of Microsoft AD LDS "ADAM" from below URL,
Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services (AD LDS) for Windows7
and install it on machine.
Now run "autorun.exe" from VMware vcenter extracted media folder to install vCenter Server and Update Manager on Windows 7.
